Global Health visionary, Dr Peter Singer, together with Cambridge organisations, explores the importance of building innovative partnerships to tackle the most pressing health problems in the world today.

The event, entitled “Prioritising Partnerships for Global Health”, launches the Cambridge Global Health Year (#CamGlobalHealth) on 21 October at Churchill College, University of Cambridge.

The launch event, chaired by Dame Sandra Dawson, will showcase collaborative projects by Cambridge organisations and Southern partners. It will be an opportunity to share the mutual learning that has advanced knowledge and practice on such key development issues as health leadership, governance, open access and appropriate technologies.

Dr Peter Singer, CEO of Grand Challenges Canada and Director at the McLaughlin-Rotman Centre for Global Health, University Health Network and University of Toronto, says:

“It is our grandest challenge to tackle the health problems that make life expectancy in many parts of the Global South less than half of what it is in the UK. The Cambridge Global Health Year is an opportunity for many different people–from different backgrounds–to come together in partnership and catalyse change.’

Lord Nigel Crisp, former Chief Executive of the NHS, and author of Turning the World Upside Down says,

“Cambridge is a world leader in every aspect of health – from research and education to the delivery of health services. I believe that it can have the greatest impact in the poor countries of the world by listening to and working with local partners in each of these countries. Experience has shown that we all have something to teach and something to learn. I am delighted that the Humanitarian Centre is providing a platform for this mutual learning.”

Dr Jenny Dean, Executive Director of The Centre for Health Leadership and Enterprise at the University of Cambridge Judge Business School, says:

“The Humanitarian Centre is providing a varied and inspiring platform to discuss and take collaborative action on the most important Global Health issues facing the world today.”

Prioritising Partnerships for Global Health’, will take place at 6pm-8:30pm on Friday 21 October, at Churchill College, University of Cambridge. It is hosted by the Humanitarian Centre, a Cambridge-based network for international relief and development.  There will be a drinks reception and opportunities for networking after the presentations, as well as the chance to engage with a host of Cambridge-based organisations working in health and healthcare issues throughout the world.
