About Us
The Humanitarian Centre is an international development network affiliated with the University of Cambridge. We bring together NGOs, researchers, entrepreneurs, academics, business leaders, students and consultants working to reduce global poverty.
The Humanitarian Centre exists to facilitate cross-sector and cross-disciplinary partnerships, share best practice, and promote dialogue and learning. In parallel we build the skills and capacity of over 40 NGOs and member groups. By adding value to UK-based work with overseas partners, the Humanitarian Centre positively impacts communities across the world.
Current activity includes:
- Events, including talks, panel discussions and networking opportunities.
- Publications, including our most recent report: ‘Upgrading development: Can technology alleviate poverty?: 2011 Cambridge International Development report: ICT4D’.
- Themed years on international development issues. Our theme for 2010-11 was ICT4D (Information and Communication Technologies for Development), and this year in 2011-12 we are focusing on Global Health.
- Training and resources for charities and not-for-profit organisations.
Our values
- We value participation and interaction in the programmes we run and the initiatives we pioneer.
- Equality, mutual respect and diversity mean that we seek to include individuals from many different backgrounds and perspectives.
- We never forget that our focus is on our colleagues and partners in developing countries whose voices must always be integral to our work, and with whom we work in collaboration and partnership rather than a posture of help and charity.
- Our culture is one of openness and sharing where people share skills, time, advice and contacts, and where challenges and failures can be discussed
- We aspire to be an innovative organisation that fosters creativity and new ways of thinking
- Our aim is that everyone who interacts with the Humanitarian Centre would be inspired, empowered and equipped to appropriately contribute to work to reduce global poverty.
