Afrinspire Student Society Afrinspire Student Society
Afrinspire Charity Student Society (ACSS) gives students an opportunity to learn about sustainable, grass route development practices. Afrinspire operates in a unique way, supporting initiatives run by local people in East Africa, allowing them to pursue their own development goals and poverty reduction strategies.
The ACSS began in 2011 to link Afrinspire as a charity with the University of Cambridge. ACSS works hard to support Afrinspire to achieve its mission, which is done primarily through fundraising activities. Speaker events are also held throughout term time which helps to raise awareness of the charities work and sustainable development practices.
Students can become involved in fundraising activities, organizing speaker events and volunteer in the Afrinspire office through ACSS. ACSS provides students with an opportunity to learn about international development and develop skills for the charity sector through direct involvement with Afrinspire. Additionally, a student trip to Uganda takes place annually.

Cambridge University Helambu Education and Livelihood Project Student Society (CU HELP) works to raise awareness of global poverty and inequality. CU HELP works in close collaboration with HELP; Helambu Education & Livelihood Project, a grassroots Nepali-based development NGO set up in 2008 to work to improve educational standards in the remote Helambu region of Nepal. Whilst a significant part of the NGO’s work is funding projects and programmes, such as salaries of teachers, construction of classrooms and provision of sports equipment, HELP are also very keen to attract English-speaking volunteers to teach in the 20-30 schools in the region. CUHELP exists to fulfil this task. We advertise for, select, prepare and assist volunteers with all aspects of their trip. CU HELP organises teacher training and training on the local culture and way of life before volunteers leave for summer placements. CU HELP also organises fundraising events for the work that HELP does in Nepal and seeks to raise awareness of HELP’s work in Nepal through Information evenings twice a year in Cambridge.

The Friends of Calcutta Cathedral Relief Service The Friends of Calcutta Cathedral Relief Service
The Calcutta Cathedral Relief Service (CRS) was established in 1971 in response to the plight of the thousands of refugees from the war in what is now Bangladesh. It subsequently evolved into a non-governmental development agency working with the poorest of the poor in a number of city slums and outlying villages. The aim of CRS is to build self-sufficient communities in slums and villages, by training and paying teachers to provide education, providing doctors to offer healthcare, and enabling the empowerment of women, in particular by teaching them skills which provide an income source. By these means, the communities are enabled to plan and manage their own progression.
The Friends of CRS is a UK registered charity which exists to support and provide funding for the work of CRS in Kolkata. Historically, the Friends have been, and continue to be, CRS’s largest single source of funds. The Trustees of the Friends work closely with the Director and staff of CRS.
