 Uganda Women’s Parliamentary Association (UWOPA): Intern, July and August 2013

 Position: Internship placement

Duration: July and August, 2013

Location: Parliament of Uganda, Kampala, Uganda

Interview date: Candidates will be shortlisted and contacted for an interview in Jan/Feb.

What is UWOPA?

The Uganda Women’s Parliamentary Association (UWOPA), which comprises of all women Members of Parliament, was established during the National Resistance Council (NRC) in the 5th Parliament of Uganda (1989-1994) with the aim of engendering the Legislative process, creating awareness campaigns and encouraging lobbying as well as advocacy, networking, resource mobilization and information dissemination. UWOPA provides a forum for Women MPs to discuss, share experiences and support activities that would enhance women’s participation, effective leadership in all dimensions of politics including socio-economics, science and technology.

UWOPA is a major contributor to a just and gender sensitive constitution, legislation and national policies that enable political, social and economic empowerment of the women and men in Uganda.

Role of the intern

A UWOPA intern will be expected to handle a diverse array of tasks. These range from researching and drafting project funding proposals and workshop reports to preparing the logistics for and accompanying MPs on upcountry outreach trips. An intern may also be called upon to assist an individual MP on a UWOPA-related project. Through this diversity of activities, the internship opens a window onto the multiple facets of UWOPA work.

Working hours are 8:30AM to 5:00PM; however, an intern should be prepared to adjust in keeping with project pressures and upcountry trip requirements.

What qualities is UWOPA looking for in an applicant?

UWOPA is looking for someone who is hard working, ready to learn and also very flexible in terms of adjusting to the work and cultural environment.

Previous work and voluntary experience as well as academic interests will be taken into account.

Logistics

Michaela Collord will provide advice concerning travel and accommodation logistics. The UWOPA internship is unpaid, although any travel expenses incurred as a result of work with UWOPA will normally be covered.

The Humanitarian Development Program is a three stage program that helps to guide new graduates or those wishing to switch jobs into the humanitarian sector:

Step 1 – Assessment into field and sector, one on one discussion with expert in the sector to identify persons goals and desired career options and create awareness around options available. Weaknesses are identified

Step 2 – Tailored made internship to address the skills needed to get into the sector. Terms of Reference tailor made addressing candidate’s weaknesses and giving the field experience necessary for getting an entry level job

Step 3 – Selected training’s identified – Training’s further address gaps in candidates experience and prepare candidate for first mission assignment.

We also follow up afterwards with our participants by having the NGO do our evaluation on them so they can improve their weaknesses.  We also help them search and apply for their first paid job as well as coach them through the interview.
